Advanced Training, Inc., [ATI] sent trainers to client companies to train employees in standard software (Word, Excel…). A star trainer, Betty, quit to go out on her own. ATI’s customers rejected three trainers they sent to replace her. Betty talked with these former clients and found out how desperate ATI was to have her back.

When ATI approached Betty to ask if she’d reconsider, Betty said, “Maybe… but my current independent contracts preclude me from working at ATI for six months.” 6 months!! ATI could lose customers entirely in six months. Tens of thousands of dollars. Betty negotiated better pay, finder’s fees on new business she brought in, severance in case things didn’t work out, and limited the vague noncompete to a specific list of four clients.

WHAT IF… I am excited about the job? Will I lose negotiating power if I let them know and show it ?

Most people have the erroneous assumption that in job interviews and negotiations, they should “not appear too eager.” In some types of negotiations, purchasing a car for instance, “playing it cool” pays off. Showing how much you really want those wheels costs you some negotiating leverage.

In job search, however, people hire enthusiasm! Cool often loses. Knowing that you really want a job can even make an employer increase the offer in hopes of attracting and retaining such enthusiastic help.

On the other hand, knowing an employer is sold on you gives you leverage. It’s important that your attitude is well matched to your natural personality and express it in a way consistent with that personality.

REAL LIFE EXAMPLE: Don’t Play it Cool.
Some people are lovable. Some people are funny. Some are quiet as a mouse. Any type can be “just the right” style for a given Hiring Decision Maker [HDM]. Hiring is a haphazard, prejudiced, imprecise art — certainly not science. Bret noticed three telltale signs that his currency ran high with the HDM. He spoke as if Bret was already a part of the company; he returned a couple times in the interview to talk about their common alma mater; he said that the combination of graphics and teaching was rare and a great fit. Bret used the “Hey, amigo! What’s the best you can do?” strategy to capitalize on that personal chemistry. It paid off.

To succeed in negotiations, you must be willing to walk [...]

To succeed in negotiations, you must be willing to walk away.

Many people sabotage career success by accepting job offers they should refuse, often ignoring gnawing doubts that arose during interviews or salary negotiations.

In any failed relationship or job situation, hints of upcoming conflicts often appear at the very beginning. Things that don’t begin right rarely improve. Job interviews and salary negotiations are like dating–if they are unpleasant, a happy “marriage” is unlikely.

For example, I once sold a business. In arranging the trip to meet the potential buyer, I inquired about transportation to his office – 40 miles from the airport. Instead of having me picked up, he suggested a bus or rental car. I thought, “Wow, he won’t spend a nickel to make my trip easier.” Three years later, I was in court to extract the payments he owed.

Belief in scarcity is often the root cause of people taking undesirable jobs.. Even savvy job hunters sometimes get tunnel vision, failing to see opportunities beyond the immediate offer. Besides accepting inferior positions, they undermine salary negotiations. In business and love, the person with no other options is less attractive, and often gets poorer treatment.

One example is a young woman we’ll call Tracy. She had a good job, but wanted to work in a different area within her industry. She applied for a position at company X, and soon had an interview. The interviewer said they were excited about Tracy because of her topnotch experience and she got the job offer.

She had done her homework and found that the industry range for similar positions is between $42,000 and $48,000. Through an inside contact, she learned that the company’s pay scale for the position ranged from $35,000 and $50,000. With that information, Tracy was astounded when they offered only $35,000.

She astutely requested a face-to-face interview with the real decision maker, rather than the interviewer. The boss said he was “too busy” to meet with her. He could spare “just a couple of minutes” over the phone.

Tracy started talking about the average industry salary, but he interrupted. “Everyone here is underpaid. That’s just how it is.”

Since he wouldn’t budge on salary, Tracy tried to negotiate an extra week of vacation (additional vacation is a raise which doesn’t cost employers more out of pocket). “No,” he said, “one week is plenty.” What about tuition reimbursement? “No.” It was “no, no and more no” with this man. He then said she must decide about the job by noon the next day.

Tracy asked how to handle the situation. She was sure there must be magic phrases to transform these dead-end negotiations.

Sometimes there aren’t. Tracy had negotiated well–except she wasn’t willing to say “no thanks,” if necessary. The boss wouldn’t negotiate and wasn’t interested in being fair–perhaps because her nonverbal communication told him she wouldn’t turn down the job. We advised her on tactics for restating her position, but our most important advice was to be willing to decline the offer. Certainly, many other companies would hire her.

Tracy, however, was unwilling to hear this. Ultimately, she accepted their unfavorable terms. We wish her well, but think she made a big mistake.

Employers should be on their best behavior during interviewing and salary negotiations. This boss, however, was unwilling to take time to meet her, was totally inflexible, despite the low offer, and demanded a quick response. He displayed no respect. By accepting the offer, Tracy sent a signal that disrespectful treatment is acceptable. We think Tracy can expect more of the same.

Pay close attention to the signals from prospective employers and your gut reactions during interviews and negotiations. They are reliable predictors of the employment relationship. ###

This month’s special webinar:

Are layoffs looming at your company? Maybe things aren’t going well with your boss? You’ve known people who have been out of work for a year—maybe two—and it’s terrifying to think of being let go in this economy. You COULD do nothing and wait to become a victim—or you can take action NOW! You may be able to protect your job or at least delay the inevitable. What you do now can also determine whether you’re out of work for many months—or just a short while. One recent client protected his severance, made his final days with the company much less stressful, and was back working 90 days after being let go.This month’s special webinar…

Is your resume getting you enough interviews? Do you ge [...]

Is your resume getting you enough interviews?

Do you get conflicting advice from people about how to make it better

In this free Webinar, you’ll learn

–How to adapt your resume to six job-search Audiences

–How to use a “T-Formatted” cover letter to OUTPERFORM your own resume

–A little known job marketing tool that gets 10-times the response of even the best resume

–Why a “Hand Bill” works much better than a resume for networking…

Not so long ago, the tools of a job search were few and simple: resumes and cover letters. These days, the number of paper and electronic job-hunting tools is overwhelming.

Confounding that overwhelm is the never-ending and conflicting advice about how to market yourself. Sure, some people are just misinformed, but some really intelligent people tell you to do different things.

This workshop will help cut through the confusion. First, you’ll learn that you get different advice because the players in the job search have different perspectives. HR professionals don’t see things the same way as the Hiring Decision Makers or Recruiters. Find out what the different players want—and how to appeal to them. Then, learn about a few powerful marketing pieces. Chances are, your competition isn’t using them well, if at all. Using the right tools mean more job interviews–and a shorter job search.

Who’s this webinar for? Anyone who’s continually confounded and overwhelmed with the free flow of never-ending and conflicting advice on how to really market yourself in this competitive job market.

Effective job searches focus on the right activities. In this workshop, Jack discusses six stages of job search activity, ranging from the passive to the very active. The passive is easiest and least effective; while the very active is more difficult, but most effective. The passive tactics focus on the published market for job openings, while the more active focus on the unpublished market. Learn how the unpublished market works and how job opportunities “incubate” before they “hatch” into job openings, as well as how you can use this knowledge to get a leg up on the competition. Get the facts to decide how you can best use your time during your job search.
